Breakfast in bed

Get the day off to a relaxed start by treating Mum to breakfast in bed. Poached eggs on toast are simple yet somehow feel special. For perfect poaching you’ll need very fresh eggs – pop to your local McColl’s to stock up. Crack into a ramekin – they will retain their shape better – then slowly ease into a pan of water at a rolling boil. Don’t forget to add a dash of vinegar to make the whites hold together. Up the luxury factor by adding a Prosecco mimosa to the breakfast tray. Half fill champagne glasses with orange juice and prosecco to put some fizz in Mum’s morning – McColl’s has some fantastic deals on Freixenet prosecco. Then tell her to have another snooze while someone else does the washing up!

Plant a seed

Spring is time to plant seeds and most summer bedding plants can now be sown. So show Mum how much you care with a gift that will keep blooming throughout the year. Get younger kids involved by helping them to decorate some plain terracotta pots. They could write ‘Best mum’ using acrylic paint (make sure you cover all surfaces you’re painting on first!) and daub motifs such as flowers. Then fill the pot with compost, pop in a seed, place in a sunny spot and water regularly. Pretty, easy-to-grow varieties such as calendula, sweet peas and cornflowers will remind Mum of your love during the summer months.

Blooming lovely

Did you know that carnations are the traditional flower of Mother’s Day? It all started when Anna Jarvis – the founder of Mother’s Day in the US – sent 500 carnations to her local church for all the mothers there. Pink carnations in particular are said to symbolise a mother’s love and tenderness. Whichever flowers you choose, they’ll be a cheerful addition to Mum’s table top or window sill. At McColl’s there are blooms for every budget, with bouquets priced at £5, £10 and £15.

Say it with chocolates

A bit of the sweet stuff always cheers us up, but could chocolate actually be good for us? In moderation, the answer is yes! The reason is flavonoids – a type of antioxidant found in chocolate, which can help stimulate blood flow by mopping up damaging substances called free radicals. But if you need another reason, Mother’s Day is a great excuse to indulge. Head to McColl’s for fantastic deals on chocolate selection boxes such as Thorntons Classic and Ferrero Heart.
