A Journey ThroughTime

As part of our ‘Women at McColl’s training programme we invited over 120 local Girl Guides, Brownies and Rainbows along to our Retail Support Centre in Brentwood, Essex for a day of events.

It’s been 100 years since Parliament passed the law to give women the vote, so what better time to celebrate women and the Girl Guiding Association through history!

Girl guides ready for the journey through time

At the ‘Journey Through Time’ themed event the girls were able to explore and interact with four different eras ranging from the 1900’s all the way up to present day. They were given the chance to learn all about key events throughout history such as the Suffragette movement and the Equal Pay Act. We even taught them about the role Guides played in WWII, the history of Rainbows and the all-important renewal of the promise.

If that wasn’t enough we put on an afternoon of fun & games, ending the day with some traditional songs around the campfire!

“All the girls enjoyed the day very much - there was plenty for all abilities to do, even the rain didn’t stop the enjoyment. The leaders were amazed at the amount of food and drink that was available throughout the day and the wonderful goody bags which the girls took home. I had parents saying what a lovely gift it was and were packed with so many gifts that some of my girls couldn’t manage to carry the bags themselves as they were so heavy.  Hilary Frankton, Girlguiding Brentwood Division Commissioner.

We were also joined by the Mayor of Brentwood, Councillor Sheila Murphy who is an official supporter of the Brentwood and District Scouts and Brentwood Division Girlguiding.

''My daughter, Elizabeth visited McColl’s along with her Brownie pack 5th Rainham and had a fabulous time learning A Journey Through Time. She came home saying ‘it was the best brownie day ever’.” Mrs Agates
